Shoalhaven International Womens Day Festival 2021

The theme for this year’s IWD Festival in the Shoalhaven LGA was 'Looking Back and Moving Forward: Journeys of Resilience.'

The IWD committee decided that 2021 would take the form of Digital Festival. The categories were Visual Arts, Performance, Sound and Music and Young women. Entries can be viewed here https://shoalhaveniwd.org/festival-2021/

I decided to enter my short film of my textiles in the landscape- Bushfire recovery and was awarded a prize. The judge’s comments:

“Open Category: First Place: Barbara Dawson.’Bushfire Recovery’: Textile Film and Music

Looking back at traumatic recent events Barbara has used images of the bushfire devastation to create textile pieces. She often directly imprints textures and materials from the burnt landscape.

Light and movement in the photography of her textiles has intensified the evocation of these delicate images.

The stitching on the textiles is almost replicating the regrowth that can be seen in the photographed images.

The music beautifully supports the flow of the imagery. The quality of the photography and cinematography supports the communication of Barbara’s ideas.

Watching the video, we both found the artwork moving and poignant. The combination and high quality of imagery, artwork and music has presented as a highly successful mingling of emotions of grief and hope.”
