Transient rythms

Barbara Dawson. 'Silva Ignes III'. Eco dyed print with iron mordant stain and stitching

    Bushfire Recovery Series

In this series of works I have been inspired by the natural world. Its beauty and hostility and its paradoxes. The recent bushfires in my area have left a ravaged landscape. I have used tannin from plants and  iron mordants to create the background.   Through the layering of different procedures: stitch on recycled cotton, I am able to make my own model of a particular landscape.

    Layers of beauty

I use stitch with a sense of peace and tranquillity.  It is a slow and meditative process and the stitch lines represent the journey and my crossings over the land.  I want to narrow the distance between the natural forms and what I am creating

    A story of the landscape

Stitching appears throughout, adding texture and unifying passages. The act of sewing, piercing the fibres, allows me to create both a physical and an emotional bond with the material. Stitch has become a tool for exploring our relationship with the world and our place in it
